Beginning in York city centre at 1pm, the tour begins with a journey into the countryside north of the city. We’ll pass through charming rural villages and beautiful farmland scenery as we head towards the hills of the North York Moors. Our first stop is at the top of Sutton Bank, where we stop to enjoy the incredible views that author and vet James Herriot described as “the finest view in England”.
Our next stop is in the picturesque village of Rievaulx, where you’ll have the option to spend 45 minutes exploring the ruins of Rievaulx Abbey (entrance payable locally). Alternatively you can enjoy a visit to the nearby town of Helmsley, where you can explore its charming marketplace and quaint streets at leisure.
The next journey takes us into the North York Moors National Park. We’ll enjoy a “five minute stroll through Hutton-le-Hole” before we continue into the very heart of the Moors, pausing to take in the spectacular views over Rosedale, one of the most beautiful sights in Yorkshire.
We’ll continue through the very middle of the Moors as we make our way through the wild, rugged scenery and head for the coastline. Our first seaside stop is in the tiny but truly remarkable fishing village of Staithes, where you’ll have 30 minutes to explore the picturesque beach, harbour and narrow streets of this delightful smugglers cove. We’ll then travel along the coastline to the town of Whitby, where you’ll have an hour and a half to explore and perhaps to enjoy fish and chips for dinner in the famous Magpie Café (or one of the many other excellent ‘chippies’ in Whitby).
Leaving Whitby, we’ll head back into the Moors as we pay a brief visit to Goathland, a small village famous for its connection to Heartbeat and Harry Potter, and pause for photos at the Hole of Horcum – also known as “Giant’s Fury”.
We’ll complete our journey back across the Moors to Pickering, before continuing back to York. We’ll arrive back into York at approximately 8pm.
