Here is a quick guide to some of the stunning locations featured in the most recent TV series “All Creatures Great and Small.” Set against the backdrop of the picturesque Yorkshire Dales, this heart-warming show, a reimagining of the original 1970/80s version, brings to life the adventures of a young veterinary surgeon, James Herriot. Here are a few locations features in the series that you can visit, whether you are heading into the Dales independently, or by joining our tour – The Yorkshire Dales of All Creatures Great & Small.

  1. The Yorkshire Dales: Nature’s Masterpiece
The Yorkshire Dales National Park is the stunning setting for “All Creatures Great and Small.” The area known to locals simply as ‘the Dales’, boasts breathtaking landscapes, charming villages and hundreds of miles of iconic dry stone walls. From rolling hills to dramatic cliffs, the natural beauty of the Dales plays a pivotal role in the series, captivating viewers with its scenic charm. Wherever you go in the Dales, you’ll be surrounded by farming life – small family farms raising sheep and cattle.
  2. ‘Darrowby’ – the Market Town of Grassington
Grassington is the central filming location for the fictional village of Darrowby. Its quaint cobbled streets and traditional stone buildings continue to perfectly represent rural England in the 1930s. Visitors can explore local shops, cafes, get your photo taken in front of Skeldale House.
  3. Heston Grange
The Alderson’s farm, known as Heston Grange, is where Helen lived with her father and younger sister. In reality, this is actually the small settlement of Yockenthwaite, located far away from the beaten track in a quiet corner of Wharfedale. The real-life location is a beautiful family farmhouse that encapsulates the essence of farming life in Yorkshire. Here you can stand on the narrow bridge and see the spot where James and Helen shared an embrace on the roof as they looked out across the beautiful Yorkshire Dales landscape.
  4. The Church of St Michael and All Angels, Hubberholme
This tiny, isolate 12th century church is used in the filming of several memorable scenes in “All Creatures Great and Small.” The church is open to the public, allowing you to see where James and Helen were married and where little Jimmy was Christened. While in the church, you can look for for little wooden mice – carvings made by famous local furniture-maker Robert Thompson (the Mouseman).
  5. The twisting roads of Wharfedale
The winding roads in the Yorkshire Dales seem almost impossibly narrow as they twist their way between the iconic dry stone walls and unique stone barns that are depicted beautifully in the series as part of the Yorkshire landscape. This area captures the essence of farm life and you’ll be so close to the sheep and cows that live in the fields beside the road that you will really understand the deep connection between the characters and their surroundings, emphasizing the show’s celebration of rural living.
