Beginning in York city centre at midday, the tour begins with a journey into the countryside north of the city. We’ll make our way towards Helmsley, passing through the village of Coxwold and pausing for a photograph at the ruins of Byland Abbey. We’ll reach Helmsley, a charming and quintessentially English market town, where you’ll have time to explore the town, visit its medieval castle and perhaps enjoy your lunch.
Those wishing to enjoy the optional countryside walk will set off with the guide on a stunning route through the countryside to the village of Rievaulx. The walk climbs gently out of Helmsley, taking in beautiful views of Helmsley Castle as you leave town. The route then takes you across the Feversham Estate as you follow the path of the famous Cleveland Way to the village of Rievaulx and the magnificent ruins of Rievaulx Abbey.
Those who do not join the walk to Rievaulx will travel by minibus from Helmsley to Rievaulx Abbey. The guide will leave the walking group at the half-way point to return to Helmsley to collect those who are not walking to Rievaulx.
In Rievaulx you have the chance to discover the historic ruins of Rievaulx Abbey, an incredible Cistercian monastery founded in 1132. You can explore the ruins at leisure using the narrated audioguide, or simply enjoy a drink in the abbey tearoom in front of Rievaulx Abbey.
To finish the tour we leave Rievaulx Abbey and head towards the hills of the North York Moors. We’ll pause for photographs along the way as we travel through Hutton-le-Hole, one of the most idyllic villages in England located on the southern edge of the Moors. We’ll continue from there to Bank Top, a magnificent viewing point above the village of Rosedale which offers a spectacular scenic view over Rosedale – one of the most awe-inspiring sights in Yorkshire.
Our return to York takes us through more of North Yorkshire’s famous scenery, including a photo stop to take in the view of the Vale of York from Terrington Bank.
