Enjoy a truly personal experience in the company of a Yorkshire guide, allowing you to ask questions along the way and to make extra photo stops on demand at truly unforgettable locations in the incredible Yorkshire Dales.

Full itinerary:

On this exclusive small-group tour from York, you explore some of Yorkshire’s most iconic scenery as you travel on the rural lanes in the Yorkshire Dales National Park, as well as spending time in the morning at the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Fountains Abbey.

With a maximum of eight passengers per group, this tour takes you away from the main roads and busy tourist trails to discover the unspoilt scenery of the Yorkshire Dales. On several occasions throughout the day, your driver-guide, a native Yorkshireman with a real connection to the region, takes you on the rural roads and country lanes that can’t be accessed by big tour groups.

We drive out of York to the market town of Knaresborough, stopping at Knaresborough Castle to enjoy the stunning views of the Nidd Gorge. We then continue through the countryside to Fountains Abbey and Studley Royal Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site that combines the majestic and historic beauty of the Cistercian Abbey ruins with the impeccable Georgian Water Garden and the true charm of the medieval Deer Park.

Spend time among the incredibly well-preserved ruins of the ancient abbey, imagining how life was for the monks who lived here several hundred years ago. Enjoy the breathtaking beauty of the Georgian Water Garden on a gentle stroll, appreciate the views as you indulge yourself with coffee and cake at the Lakeside Café and then enjoy a drive through the medieval Deer Park as we look for the different herds of deer.

5 Reasons to Visit Fountains Abbey

We leave Fountains Abbey and travel through the small city of Ripon and out towards the scenery of the amazing Yorkshire Dales National Park.

We pass through the market town of Masham and make a photo stop at the ruins of Middleham Castle, the Royal Castle of the Dales.

As we reach the Yorkshire Dales, we travel through quaint villages and over rolling farmland in Wensleydale before arriving at Aysgarth Falls. Here, you have time to walk around the Upper Falls, the majestic limestone-stepped falls that were featured in Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves.

We then reach Hawes, a market town that is home to the famous Wensleydale Creamery. Here you have time to sample the famous local cheese in the tasting room and can see how Wensleydale Cheese is made in the cheese room and viewing gallery.

The next part of the tour takes us up above Wensleydale as we climb up into some of the most dramatic scenery in the Yorkshire Dales. We travel through the Buttertubs Pass, pausing to see the Buttertubs and to take in the spectacular views. Continuing down into Swaledale, we travel through the tiny village of Muker and find one of the best driving roads in the whole of the Yorkshire Dales, winding between stone walls as we climb up and out of the dale and across an area of moorland. A couple of photo stops on this section of the tour allows you to feel the remoteness of the region and to capture the true beauty of the Yorkshire Dales.

As we continue back into Wensleydale, we pause in the late afternoon light at Bolton Castle in the village of Castle Bolton. Our last photo stop of the day offers more superb views over the rolling valley scenery of Wensleydale.

Finally, we head out of the Yorkshire Dales and make our way back to York to conclude a fantastic day out in Yorkshire.
